What a Waste!

This is a collection of unsolicited mail received during 2007 at one home on the northern beaches of Sydney. It weighs 28.6 kilograms. Based on this figure, the unsolicited mail for all Sydney households for one year would weigh 42,000 tonnes and fill 35,000 cubic metres.

Such collections give a fascinating glimpse into current fashions and obsessions: the plethora of takeaway restaurants; weight-loss programs; personal development courses; amazing commercial offers which will never be beaten or repeated; political issues; community debates and concerns et cetera and, perhaps, ad nauseam.Representative samples such as this are routinely collected by the Mitchell Library.
