A Dodgy Affair

We gratefully acknowledge Labors support to forgive our Muslim brothers who have been unjustly sentenced to death for the Bali bombings.

This bogus election leaflet was distributed just days before the 2007 Federal election in the marginal western Sydney seat of Lindsay. The leaflet purported to come from the Islamic Australia Federation (which is non-existent) and urged all Muslims to vote for the Labor Party. It falsely claimed that Labor supported forgiving the 2002 Bali bombers. The leaflet had in fact been issued by people associated with the Liberal candidate. The incident created a great controversy, received publicity outside Australia and proved counter-productive. Labor won the seat.
