H. Lippmann’s treasured correspondence

Memory Bank

Letters received,1939-1946Henry Lippmann, known to his family as Heinz, was born in Berlin in 1921. The elder son of a Jewish family, he was evacuated to Britain in August 1939. His parents and brother farewelled him at the train station, the last time Henry would see them.

Henry was transported to Australia on board the ship Dunera, arriving in Sydney in September 1940, and interned. On release in 1942, he enlisted in the Australian Army.

His parents and brother, meanwhile, remained in Berlin and wrote regularly.

The family was transported to Warsaw Ghetto on 5 April 1942 and the last news Henry heard of them was from the Red Cross in June 1942. After the War, Henry learned they had perished in Trawniki labour camp in Poland.

The letters Henry received were stored in this handmade, hessian stationery wallet with his initials, ‘H.L.L.’, for Heinz Louis Lippmann.
