William Hodges

Ice with Everything

The resolution and adventure, 4 Jan, 1773 …, 1886The Resolution and Adventure were the ships of James Cook’s second great Pacific voyage. This drawing records them at latitude 61°, south of Cape Town. Hodges’ use of light and shade evokes this threatening and eerie, yet exquisitely beautiful, part of the world.

In freezing conditions, Cook and his men shortly afterwards crossed the Antarctic Circle for the first time in history and in January 1774 would reach 71°10’ South, a record which would last for almost fifty years.
