Doug Moran National Portrait Prize 2006
Artists from across the country are encouraged to submit a recent portrait painted from life of an Australian who need not be well-known. There are thirty-six portraits in this year's Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, chosen from a field of 425 entries. This selection is a record of contemporary Australian society, personalities and diversity as expressed by some of our best and emerging artists.
Thanks to the passion and generous patronage of the Moran family, this major prize has supported portraiture and toured the finalists' work across Australia since 1988. Their commitment to continuing the prize in perpetuity demonstrates an important partnership between corporations, cultural institutions and artists in the development of Australian culture and identity.
The winner receives $100,000. Judges - Andrew Sayers, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, and Jenny Sages, a prominent artist - also selected 5 works to be highly commended.
