Racing and racegoers
Racing in Sydney has always been popular and Randwick racecourse has been one of the premier venues since its re-opening in 1860. The Australian Jockey Club's prestigious races and rich prizes attract owners and punters looking for a win, as well as crowds of less ambitious racegoers, out to see and be seen. These photographs from the State Library's vast collections, document the races, the horses, the fashion and the field from 1863 until the mid 20th century. Many of these photographs are by prolific Sydney photographer, Sam Hood.
