Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser

In 1803 Governor King authorised the publication of Australia's first newspaper, the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser. As well as shipping news, town gossip and commercial news the newspaper contained government proclamations, regulations and detailed court appearances. The Sydney Gazette was important as a reliable source of largely factual information. Each issue was strictly reviewed.

George Howe, the editor and publisher of the Sydney Gazette, was transported for life for shoplifting in 1800. With previous experience working on the London Times he was quickly designated Government Printer. Howe used a small wooden printing press brought out with the First Fleet.
