Maitland Mercury
The Maitland Mercury is Australia's oldest regional newspaper. Established in 1843, it still serves the community of the city of Maitland and the surrounding Lower Hunter Valley, printing local, national and international news stories, including issues of political and economic interest to the region as well as social and sporting activities.
First issued on 7 January 1843, the Mercury was originally published as a weekly newspaper. Even in the 1840s, it strove to be more than just a local newspaper reporting only Hunter River news. It published articles related to all of NSW and the whole of Australia, as a well as news from New Zealand and overseas, which was critical to the financial survival of the newspaper.
