Adventures of Ikey Solomon

The capture of Ikey Solomon in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1829 and his return to England for trial were scintillating news stories. The reading public of England could not get enough information on Ikey Solomon from newspapers alone. Thus three pamphlets - written in the racy, tabloid style of the time - were published hastily to coincide with Ikey's return to England.

The pamphlet below has the unwieldy title, Adventures, memoirs, former trial, transportation & escapes of that notorious fence and receiver of stolen goods, Isaac Solomons, better known to the public by the cognomen of Ikey Solomons : together with the apprehension, trial and subsequent transportation of Mrs Solomons and her husband's ultimate re-apprehension in New South Wales. While the identity of its author is unknown, it is claimed the author was 'a former police officer in New South Wales'.

This pamphlet, like the other two listed below, is more than anything a work of fiction. While basic facts about Ikey Solomon's life and family are included, many of the alleged crimes so luridly described in such published pamphlets bear little resemblance to those Ikey actually committed.
