James King log and journal

James King (1750-1784) served under Captain James Cook on his third and final voyage around the world. King shared responsiblilty with Cook in recording important astronomical readings to establish the Resolution's position at sea. King's work was an important contribution to the accuracy of the various surveys carried out during the voyage. Following Cook's death in 1779 in Hawaii, King helped lead the ships on the remainder of thier course. James Clarke assumed command of the expedition, however when he died of comsumption later that year, command was assumed by Lieutenants John Gore and James King.

King's logbook and journal records regular weather, sea and astronomical observations during the voyage. He describes the discovery of the Sandwich Isles (Hawaii) in 1778 and early interactions with the native peoples. His 'Vocabulary of Different Islands in the South Seas' includes languages of the Sandwich Isles, Easter Isles, Society Isles, Friendly Isles and New Zealand. The journal ends before their return to Hawaii and the death of Cook in 1779.
