The
Cunningham Plains Subdivision included 74 lots of varying sizes, ranging from 40
acres to 4482 acres. Depending upon the quality and location of the lot, the
price varied from £2 to £10 per acre. Advertising for the new subdivision
proudly states: ‘In the early days the property was timbered with White and
Yellow Box, Apple, and some scattered Gum, these have all been long since ring
barked, and large areas cleared.’
Located 360 kilometres from Sydney, potential buyers were enticed to inspect the properties by the offer of specially reduced train fares.
This subdivision plan is typical of the colourful posters produced by estate
agents to promote land and property sales. The Mitchell Library has over 40,000
subdivision plans, ranging from handdrawn surveyors’ plans from the 1790s
through to these brightly coloured posters from the early twentieth century.
