The
cup was given to Franklin in November 1940 by the botanist, Richard Baker, who
had advocated the waratah as Australia’s national flower as far back as 1915.
Franklin was known for her passionate commitment to Australian writing and Baker
had gone to some trouble to find this cup which displayed his chosen symbol of
Australia. The cup had been manufactured thirty-five years previously, about the
time Franklin had had her spectacular success with My brilliant career
(1901).
