William
Lawson (1774–1850) had been an officer of the New South Wales Corps and was at
this time lieutenant of the New South Wales Veterans’ Company. He had trained as
a surveyor and this knowledge made him a valuable member of the expedition. His
journal, with its accurate record of times and distances, enables the route to
be precisely retraced today. Lawson became the commandant of the new settlement
at Bathurst in 1819, a post he held until 1824.
