Chart of the Pacific Ocean, 1798The chart includes all known discoveries in the Pacific up to the date of publication, including James Cook’s three voyages. It also includes the routes followed by other explorers such as Louis Antoine de Bougainville, Philip Carteret and William Bligh.

The Arrowsmith family was one of London’s finest publishers of maps and charts in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This engraved Chart of the Pacific Ocean, published in nine sheets, was Aaron Arrowsmith’s most important contribution to the mapping of the Pacific. It was published in several editions from 1798 through to 1832.

The Mitchell Library’s Pacific collection is internationally renowned. David Scott Mitchell realised the significance of the Pacific region for Australia and included it in his area of collecting. This collection has continued to be added to over the last century.
