While James Cook had made significant discoveries in the Pacific, in 1771 he still felt there was much to explore. This map of the southern hemi-sphere charts his proposed route for a second expedition, in which he crisscrossed the Pacific, sailing further south than any man had done before and proving beyond doubt that there was no southern continent.
