The chest was constructed in Newcastle under the supervision of the settlement’s commandant, Captain James Wallis. Wallis presented it to Macquarie, who took it back to Britain in 1822. Within the chest are drawers and trays containing natural history specimens collected locally, as well as panels painted with scenes of the Newcastle district by John Lycett.
