Transported for seven years for theft, Simeon Lord arrived in Sydney in 1791. Emancipated early, he rapidly built up a substantial mercantile empire with interests in trade, manufacturing and land. Macquarie appointed him magistrate in 1810, and he was a frequent guest at Government House.
