Promissory note for 10 shillings, 29 January 1814
Garnham Blaxcell
Manuscript and printed
Bequest of Sir William Dixson, 1952
DL P 254
Promissory notes were privately issued by colonists on specially printed forms. Unfortunately, they were all too often issued in payment for goods by those without the means of redeeming them. Such fraudulent practices contributed to the colony's declining credit.
