Grocer’s gazette
After 1803, the Sydney Gazette was issued each Saturday, providing a vehicle for publishing official orders, notices about upcoming sales on board ship and the goods available in the markets, as well as advertising space for a growing number of retailers.
This copy of the Gazette is uniquely relevant to Sydney’s shopping history at a time when irregular supply led to frequent gluts and shortages. On 14 September 1806, grocer’s wrapping paper was the only paper stock available in sufficient quantity for printing the colony’s news-sheet.
This is possibly the only example of early 19th century grocer’s wrapping paper that survives
anywhere in the world.
