Placed in command of a six pounder, Macquarie was ordered to open fire on the Dutch-held town of Cochin (now Kochi, on the southwest coast of India) so as to divert the enemy’s attention from the main British breaching battery until it was ready to commence its own bombardment. Although he came under sustained fire himself, Macquarie emerged unscathed.
