Survivor: First Fleet

Instructions

In this activity you play the role of Governor Arthur Phillip. With the information you have (from the sources) you will have to make decisions and recognise issues that are vital to the survival of the European settlement at Sydney Cove.

Choose the best option for each question. Will the young colony flourish under your leadership or will it starve?

Reading and Writing

You listened to or read many sources in this activity. Some were from letters and some were from journals. Some were largely descriptions of the conditions in the colony while others gave opinions. Some were formal, others were informal.

There were also phrases and expressions that indicate the text-type and who or what the writing is for. For example, in one of the sources, the words, 'My Lord' are used which show respect.

Imagine again that you are Governor Phillip. It is December 1790. Write a two-paragraph letter to the King. In the first paragraph you will merely describe the new settlement at Rose Hill. In the second paragraph give your opinion of the colony's ability to support and feed itself compared to 1788.
