Celebrating Australia Day

Based on the evidence, on what date should Australia Day be celebrated – January 26 or later?

A close look at the journals, letters and Bradley’s colour sketch of the First Fleet entering Port Jackson raises the issue about the date on which the official ‘founding’ ceremony was held.  The traditional founding day is January 26.  The fleet was in Botany Bay earlier than January 26 but a formal ceremony was not held until the shift was made to Port Jackson and the settlement site selected in Sydney Cove.
