V*/Expl/2
This watercolour depicts Macquarie’s camp, erected on the Bathurst Plains on 4 May 1815. The location was a ‘delightful spot for a town, commanding a view of the surrounding country to a considerable extent’. The imposing tents, imported from India, cost Macquarie £551, much to the annoyance of his budget-conscious superiors.
