Conflict between Marsden and Macquarie first arose in April 1810 when, to the Governor’s outrage, Marsden refused to serve on the board of trustees of the Parramatta turnpike road with two emancipists. To do so, he told Macquarie, would be degrading to his position as the colony’s senior chaplain.
