After Leaving Gallipoli in December 1915, Sommers was transferred into a composite regiment which became known as the Western Frontier Force.

Sommers was hospitalised in England and transported home to Australia before the end of the war with trench fever.

Sommers donated his collection of correspondence and artworks to the Library in 1933.

Sommers died in 1934 at the age of 56.
