Manuscript

Barwick’s brothers, Stan and Len, also fought in World War I. Stan was killed in action in October 1917 in the Third Battle of Ypres.

The battalion was raised within a fortnight of the declaration of war in August 1914 and embarked just two months later.

Len served alongside Archie at Gallipoli and the Western Front. They both survived the war and returned to Australia.

The 1st Battalion’s most notable engagement at Gallipoli was the Battle of Lone Pine in August 1915.

Barwick’s diaries were published in 2013 as a book, In Great Spirits.

Barwick was awarded the Croix de Guerre from the French in July 1918 before returning to Australia in December 1918.

Barwick filled 16 volumes of diaries during the war.

The Library purchased Barwick’s diary collection in 1922 for £25 as part of its European War Collecting Project, established in 1918.

The 1st Battalion was the first infantry unit recruited for the AIF in New South Wales during World War I.
