Sydney Heads, c. 1853

Oil painting ML 257
Dreaming London,
two farewell,
the turbulent hour when
winds disturb minds, ship and sailors,
destiny uncertain.
Harbour Heads.
Dark cruel shores
high the vantage
seas frothing at its mouth,
ship sailing though sea and shower,
for irredeemable Thames,
Liverpool or darker Glasgow.
From this continent half-found,
half-founded
floundering,
comes the cry
gold! gold! gold!
people leaving Sydney
in all directions.
