Tagebucher (daybook), 27 September 1832 to 16 May 1841

C 1851
Ink on paper

During the period of the ‘daybook’ Leichhardt studied philosophy and languages at the Universities of Berlin and Göttingen; then medical and natural science at the Royal College of Surgeons, the British Museum and the Jardin des Plantes; and carried out field observation in England, France, Italy and Switzerland. Five months after the last entry in this ‘daybook’ Leichhardt sailed from London to fulfill his plan to study the exciting new discoveries in natural science in Australia.

This tagebucher comprises notebooks of different sizes which were bound in vellum by the Public Library of NSW in 1902.

The practice of addressing Leichhardt as 'Doctor' arose later out of recognition by his contemporaries that he was a man of learning dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge.
