A community of artists

By Martin Sharp

"It really came out of an idea of Van Gogh's, 'cause he called his studio the 'Yellow House' and he wanted to start a community of artists in the south, in the sunshine, you know, to get away from the madness of Paris. In a small way, he certainly did it. And I was inspired by that idea."

Last exhibition

By Louis Nowra

"... in 1970 the pop artist Martin Sharp held what was going to be the last exhibition before the building was to be demolished to make way for tower blocks. Sharp and his helpers painted the walls orange, red, black and blue. The opening in May was described as 'the wildest, most way-out scene of the week ... where guests wore really wild gear and many looked as if they had come from a performance of Hair.'  The venue did not close and was bought by a new owner, who allowed Sharp and his growing band of artists to continue to use the twenty-room building as a community art centre."
