The clubs were on opposite sides of the road and dancers worked both joint. She liked to watch them criss-crossing the road:

... sure footed in ridiculously high heels, young, tall, fit and stacked ... They looked like double-breasted Amazons ... They proudly sported gigantic, decorated beehives that would have made Marie Antoinette jealous. These often almost metre-high masterpieces were created weekly and kept in place with shellac."
