Miss S. Kearnes (Kearns?)

1870-1875
Glass photonegative

Sarah Kearnes was photographed on several occasions in the Hill End studio. Here she displays her latest bustled dress, with contrasting fringing. The folding Brewster stereoscopic viewer and carte de visite photograph on the table are studio props, also seen in the portrait of Ellen Brady.

From 'Empire', Saturday 15 January 1853

We have no doubt the time is not far distant when nothing but binocular portraits will be taken, to be thrown into relief by the stereoscope. In considering the relations of photography to the art of portraiture, we are disposed to give it a still higher rank... Sculptors, too, are beginning to see the application of the stereoscope to their art. Double pictures of the subject may be taken and raised into relief, and from such pictures, executed on one side of the globe, an artist on the other side may produce an admirable statue.
