Miss Jeffree

1870-1875
Glass photonegative

Clutching a blond china doll, Eliza Jane Jeffree poses for the camera. She was the eldest of six children of Albert Jeffree, a successful Cornish miner and the head brewer at Hill End’s only brewery. The studio’s false skirting board is some distance away from the wall, concealing the base of a head clamp holding Eliza still during the lengthy exposure.

From the Sydney Morning Herald (NSW: 1842 - 1954) Saturday 4 March 1876

THE great event of this week has been the Mayor's picnic,  at the Bald Hill, on Friday last... The day was all that could be wished, the sky-was cloudless, and a cool wind made the temperature delightful ; add to this that the HillEndbrewery was close at hand, and Mr. Inch, the jovial proprietor, at home;   and it will be seen that to those happy spirits who had had enough to eat, and who know how to take care of themselves, nothing was left to be desired. Mr. Inch suffered most by the prevailing thirst, as he absolutely refused any payment. [The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW: 1842 - 1954) Saturday 4 March 1876, p5]
