Heinrich Pieter Meier arrived in Sydney from Germany in 1858, becoming naturalised in 1861 and anglicising his name. He operated a Shaving, Haircutting and Shampooing Salon in Clarke Street and was also chief of the Hill End fire brigade. His dog was the brigade’s mascot.

From the Australian Town and Country Journal (NSW : 1870 - 1907) Saturday 10 January 1880

About  1 o'clock this morning; the Wesleyan church bell announced that something unusual had taken place. The Church of England and Roman Catholic church bolls also commenced tolling, and soon the in habitants of HillEnd were roused out of their slumbers and made aware of the fact that a fire was raging in the business part of Clarke street. The fire originated in Pymont's store... Willing hands were soon on the scene, everybody working with a will, and by sheer force of pluck and perseverance the fire was kept to the one building, which, with Mr. Pymont's large stock of groceries, is totally destroyed.
