Mrs Hawkes and her children stand in front of the unusual wooden veranda of this miner's cottage. The same cottage can be seen side-on in the view of Gulgong from Church Hill, revealing the simple dwelling behind the façade.
During the recent visit of the Duke of Manchester he was much dissatisfied with the ordinary habitations of the miners, which, as a rule, are the merest shanties, constructed of bark and mud or any odd material that may be on hand; and, in compliance with his wishes, a row of comfortable detached galvanised iron dwellings are now being completed, each house containing from two to four rooms, with brick chimney and fireplace, boarded floor, and a neat verandah outside, each house also standing on an allotment 80ft deep, with 50ft frontage, and let at the very low rental...
