Joseph Whitehead was a wool trader based in Macquarie Place, Sydney. Writing to his uncle in England, he describes the level of crime in the city:

Sydney is without exception one of the most wicked places under the sun murders, suicides, robberies, innumerable pride, hypocrisy, lying, back biting, drunkeness, and debauchery without end …
