During
the First World War, local Red Cross branches were set up across NSW, where
armies of volunteers (mostly women) knitted socks, rolled bandages and prepared
comfort parcels to send to the troops. Most of the volunteers made their own uniforms. They also cared for patients at invalid hospitals.
