Real Australians Say Welcome

POSTERS/2015/227

For the ‘Real Australians Saw Welcome’ poster campaign Peter Drew installed 1000 posters around Australia in all the capital cities and many regional centres. The poster was inspired by the often forgotten second verse of the National Anthem that calls upon our “courage to combine”. Peter believes that ‘courage’ seems strangely absent from Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers.

Peter Drew raised money for this campaign through the crowd funding tool pozible and documented the project in Instagram using the #RealAustraliansSayWelcome.

State Library of New South Wales acquired the poster as part of our commitment to contemporary collecting.  The issue of asylum seekers has and continues to be a highly contested and politicised issue in Australian society.
