'a letter for mr howe federal minister for health', 1990–1993

From the collection of ACT UP/Sydney records, 1987–1993

These colourful, dramatic and well-designed flyers were drawing attention to what was believed to be a lack of action by the Australian Government, particularly the Minister for Health Brian Howe.

Australia's response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic is recognised as one of the best in the world in containing the infection rates and the positive way the community was engaged in a safe sex message.  Community organisations like Act Up were part of this change.

ACT UP

By Louise Denoon

Aids Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP) was formed in New York in March 1987.  As gay men continued die from this little know disease Act Up was a dynamic group of activists committed to taking direct action to bring about change and save people’s lives.

Gay men in Sydney and Australia faced similar issues and in the same year a Sydney group of ACT UP was formed.  They aimed to share information about treatments, showcase the need for research, fight homophobia and to show compassion towards men living with HIV AIDS.

Act Up Sydney’s records were donated to the Library 1993 and includes newsletters, meeting minutes, telephone trees, correspondence, reports and promotional material.
