Koala and Young (1803)

Watercolour

Purchased 1983

ML 896

Commissioned by Governor King in 1803, this is one of the earliest known depictions of the koala. Lewin was criticised by his contemporaries and in a letter to Sir Joseph Banks, Colonel William Paterson described the watercolour as ‘very bad’.
