"Protected by the import restrictions on American comics ... and encouraged by the lifting of restrictions on newsprint, the business expanded rapidly until, for the first time, nearly all the comics and popular magazines on the market were printed in Australia. By 1954 there were over 60 million comic books produced each year, the publishers including not only the large companies but a number of disreputable fly-by-night firms and small speculators..."
