This bustling city streetscape of Sydney’s main thoroughfare, looking south from the north side of Wynyard, is remarkable for its architectural detail and lifelike rendering of jostling vehicles and pedestrians. At the centre of the scene is the imposing General Post Office, completed in 1874, and recorded before the tower was built but after the clock was moved (for pedestrian convenience) to overhang the street, while the buildings in the foreground would be demolished in about 1891 to make way for the creation of Martin Place.
