Island Press was founded in 1970 by Canadian poet, musician and Sydney University lecturer Philip Roberts. He lived on Scotland Island at that time, hence the name. The first ten Island Press books were printed on expensive paper on an old hand-operated press, with hand-set lead type. In 1979 Island Press was given to Philip Hammial who moved it to the Blue Mountains. Over the last four decades Island Press has published over 50 titles.
Here at the State Library NSW we hold at least 30 publications by Kevin,
including The Cherry Pickers, Living Black: Blacks talk to Kevin Gilbert,
End of Dream-time and People are Legends. We also hold the
literary manuscript that was to become End
of Dreamtime, which is titled ‘Cry of Love' (Kevin John Gilbert poems).
