"To have Bob Carr say that Bob Gould was the most well read man that he had known was not only truthful, but also a great compliment."

There are over thirty second-hand bookshops in Newtown.

Political activism runs in the Gould family. Bob’s father Steve was expelled from the Labor Party for opposing conscription. Bob was booted out of Trotskyist meetings for being too vocal. Daughter Natalie takes to the streets putting up pro-refugee posters that the Council remove.

This shop, located in Newtown since 1988, has more than a million books for sale.

This bookshop has been immortalised in the award-winning Australian novel, The Glade Within the Grove,  depicting the 1960s anti-Vietnam movement.
