Mario Conte, Conte Tailors, 14 King Street, 20 February 2013

a8817 Online No. 11

"The most rare item I've had would be quality Australian made fabric."

In the 1980s, Mr Conte made outfits for Mods enjoying the revival of the '60s music and fashion scene. Custom designs included a double-breasted, three-button jacket with a short straight skirt worn with sling-back shoes.

Nowadays Mr Conte's customers include men taking their eBay-purchased suits to be refitted. His shop signage has been captured on Instagram by curators at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne.

This shop ran an underground betting agency in 1916 which was shut down after an undercover policeman placed a bet on a horse.
