Black Star Pastry recently opened a second store in Rosebery.

Prior to World War I a two-storey bakery once operated in Newtown, pumping out 5000 loaves of bread each day. Upstairs was used for kneading and downstairs for baking.

The signature Black Star cake is the gluten-free Strawberry Watermelon Cake with rose-scented cream.

Electric ovens were a novelty in the 1920s. The Apex Co. Bakers and Pastrycooks in King Street installed their electric oven in the window with the slogan 'Baked Before Your Eyes'!
