"Newtown wouldn’t be the same without its murals."

A century ago Burtons Shop for Frocks sold clothing here.

This shop, now called 576 King, acts as a go-between for companies wanting to commission murals, fine art and graffiti from local artists.

Marrickville Council has established an unofficial street art preservation policy, recognising the creative and cultural value it adds to the community. An artist can produce a work once permission from the building owner is obtained.

In 2012, the City of Sydney, which also has control over parts of Newtown, reviewed its policy on street art, graffiti and murals. The Council's aim is to protect artworks that have 'heritage significance'.
