Hutton was a cook for a senior officer, though this wasn’t a successful occupation for him and he ultimately left it to be a groom.
After the armistice was signed, Hutton was employed in England, working as a clerk in the Finance Department. He eventually returned to Australia on 25 September 1919.
The Library purchased Hutton’s diaries for £7.
Hutton was at Pozières in July 1916, and his battalion stayed in the Somme region through the very bleak winter of 1916–17 when the mud froze in the ground and many soldiers suffered frostbite and trench foot.
