Colville married Rita Seitz in February 1920 and they settled in East Kew, Melbourne.

After World War II, Colville became an official war artist for the Australian War Memorial.

The Australian War Memorial sent Colville to Japan to paint 20 artworks documenting the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) during 1949–50.

Colville became a founding member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society, established in 1918.
