David Rumsey map collection

The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection has over 20,000 maps and images online. The collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North American and South American maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia, and Africa are also represented. Collection categories include antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, pocket, wall, childrens, and manuscript maps. The collection can be used to study history, genealogy and family history.

Dawn and New Dawn : A Magazine for the Aboriginal People of NSW (1952 - 1975)

Dawn and New dawn magazines were published between 1952 and 1975 by the NSW Aborigines Welfare Board. They include family history information such as births, deaths, and marriages, as well as hundreds of photographs. They also contain articles about conditions and activities on reserves, stations, homes and schools in NSW. The full text of Dawn and New dawn are available at this site. Biographical information on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Dawn, New dawn and other magazines is also indexed by the INFOKOORI Database.

Deaths from the South Australian Government Gazettes 1845 - 1941 (including NT until Dec. 1910)

Deaths in South Australia and the Northern Territory were published in the South Australian Government Gazettes from the early days of settlement. The majority of names in the list have been compiled from police returns, including Police Mortuary Returns. The returns were stated to include all persons without relations, known or resident in SA or NT, who died, or were found dead in any public place and about which the police could furnish any information. The reports also include references to inquests.

Dictionary of Australian Artists Online

The Dictionary of Australian Artists Online ( DAAO ) provides biographical data, contextual information, commentary and links to images on the topic of Australian artists.

The foundation data focuses predominantly on colonial artists; women artists to 1950; black and white artists; Aboriginal artists of the Western Desert and the Sydney region. However, the database is constantly being added to and currently there are about 7,659 biographies.

Set up by NSW University Library with the support of the Australian Research Council, this database also has the support of a number of public art galleries, universities and national/state libraries around Australia.

Dictionary of Australian biography 1949 edition.

Published by Angus & Robertson in 1949, the Dictionary of Australian biography by Percival Serle contains 1030 biographies of Australians, or people closely connected with Australia, who died before the end of 1942.

Dictionary of New Zealand biography

More than 3000 biographies of New Zealanders of historical note, originally published in the printed Dictionary of New Zealand biography series and in the parallel Maori-language series, Nga Tangata Taumata Rau. The editorial policy aims to include not only figures of national importance but also those who were representative in a regional, tribal, ethnic or occupational context. The site does not include people who are alive.

Dictionary of Sydney Project

The Dictionary of Sydney is an online encyclopaedia which aims to cover every aspect of the history of the Sydney region (including the Blue Mountains) - from the earliest human habitation to the present. It includes people, places, buildings, events, cultural groups, natural features, organisations, other structures, artefacts and thematic essays. It contains images, sound, film, documents and maps, as well as new scholarship, research and bibliographies. The Dictionary also aims to be accessible through other technologies including mobile delivery, print-on-demand and others yet to be developed.

Essays are being commissioned on many themes regarding Sydney's history. From 2004 to 2006, the emphasis has been on selecting over 90 authors for entries on over 650 Sydney suburbs. A range of content commissioned for the Dictionary is also showcased in the online Sydney Journal. You can also subscribe to the Project’s quarterly eNewsletter which will update you on all Project news items over the previous 3 months.

This project was initiated by the City of Sydney's History Program and subsequent sponsors include the Australian Research Council, University of Sydney, University of Technology (Sydney), State Library of NSW, 39 Sydney council local studies departments, State Records NSW etc

Diploma in Family Historical Studies & FH Seminars : Society of Australian Genealogists

The Society of Australian Genealogists has an Activity Programme and online bookings can be made for Family History Lectures & Demonstrations, Special Interest Group meetings, 'Hands on' Computer Sessions, Orientation Tours at 379 Kent Street (members only), Software sessions and Bus Trips and Walks at SAG Course Bookings.

SAG also offers a Diploma in Family Historical Studies (Dip FHS) which it first instituted in 1974. The Diploma is undertaken over 2-3 years with a minimum study time of 2 years and a maximum of 3.

The Diploma is awarded to candidates who show a high degree of proficiency in the study of family history based on a written thesis, essay, case study and examination. There is an 18-page bibliography of past submissions at list of theses & essays submitted. There are no structured lessons, regular assignments to complete or lectures to attend (other than the elective Archives Option which is only open to Sydney-based candidates). Candidates can live anywhere in Australia (or overseas).

Applications for admission to the Diploma course are accepted from 1 January - 31 March each year. All applications must be accompanied by the prescribed fee and provide a synopsis of the proposed thesis and essay topic to be studied. A short explanation of the reasons an applicant wishes to undertake the course must also be provided. Applicants will be notified of their successful admission to the course by 30 May. Candidates must be financial members of the Society of Australian Genealogists and they must remain members for the period of their candidature.

There is an online Diploma Application Form and Brochure. For further information or advice, intending candidates should consult the Executive Officer of the Society of Australian Genealogists, Richmond Villa, 120 Kent Street Sydney NSW 2000. The Diploma is administered by a Committee appointed by the SAG Council ( See Diploma Regulations ).

Dispossessed, Diggers and Democrats : Australia 1788-1880s

Produced by the Department of History & Politics and the Centre for Educational Development & Interactive Resources, University of Wollongong, in 1997, this CDROM is designed for first year university or upper secondary school students with little or no knowledge of Australian history. The authors are Jim Hagan, Helen E. Carter and John McQuilton.

Dispossessed, Diggers and Democrats introduces nineteenth century Australian history in an interactive format. From the arrival of Governor Phillip to the bushrangers, it covers key themes using timelines, original documents and period illustrations. Features include mapping excercise, quizzes, the selector game and school room exercises from the period.

The 16 topics, covering various aspects of the first century of European settlement in Australia, are: Why Botany Bay?; Early NSW; Macquarie and Bigge; Convicts; The Squatters; Wakefield; Aboriginal Australia; Gold; Eureka Rebellion; Economy; Constitutions; Selection; Education; Migration and Ethnicity; The Great White Walls; and Australia's Errant Sons.

Documenting a Democracy : Australia's Story - National Archives of Australia

Documenting a Democracy is a National Archives of Australia website - developed in partnership with Australia's eight state and territory government archives and the National Council for the Centenary of Federation - that provides 110 key documents, in both digital and transcription format, relating to the foundation of Australia.

Key documents include nine sets of original legal and constitutional instruments for the creation and evolution of the Commonwealth, states and territories governments, accessed by either a place or map search tool. There is a Picture Album of people and places behind the documents; information on how Australia's constitutional boundaries were formed at Places; and an Australian history Timeline which shows what was happening when each document was written.

There are also Pathways to documents on the themes of Foundation, Building, Freedoms and Land. This webpage includes a digital map of Aboriginal Australia before the advent of Europeans.
