Published for the National Aboriginal Consultative Committee (NACC) by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies in 2004, this CDROM contains the electoral roll for over 27,000 Indigenous people (aged 18 and over) who voted to elect 41 members of the National Aboriginal Consultative Committee ( NACC ) on 24 November 1973.
NACC voters had to be an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander and registered on the Commonwealth Electoral Roll. The total number of Aboriginal adults eligible to enrol for the NACC elections was 53,000 and the total number of Aboriginals in Australia at the time is estimated at 116,000.
The NACC was the first national representative organisation in the Australian body politic for Australian Aborigines. Altogether there were 41 National Aboriginal Consultative Committee Electoral Districts: New South Wales 8; Victoria 3; Queensland 9; South Australia 4; Western Australia 8; Tasmania 1; and Northern Territory 8. Electors residing in the Capital Territory were included in the appropriate Electoral District for the State of New South Wales.
In 1977 the Federal Government dissolved the NACC and replaced it with the National Aboriginal Conference (NAC), which in turn was abolished in 1986. The NAC was subsequently superseded by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), established by the Federal Government under Bob Hawke through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission Act 1989 (the ATSIC Act), which took effect on 5 March 1990. ATSIC was then formally abolished on 24 March 2005 by the Federal Government under John Howard.

The majority of the ships in these records sailed from British ports to Sydney. However, a few went to Moreton Bay, which was part of New South Wales until 1859, and Newcastle. This database contains a collection of the Sand’s postal directories for Sydney and NSW from 1861-1933. Directories were NOT issued in 1862, 1872, 1874, 1878, or 1881.
There are usually several sections in each directory. These can include: Alphabetical name directory, Advertisements, Commercial directory, Professional directory, Street directory and Index.
The alphabetical name section lists the names of each head of household and their districts of residence. Often their occupations and/or street addresses will also be listed.
The commercial and professional directories contain information on businesses and companies and may be useful to learn more about your ancestor’s occupation. The street directory lists individuals and businesses alphabetically by name of street and number. The index will tell you what page number in the directory a particular individual or business is listed on.
Directories are extremely useful for locating people in a particular place and time. They are excellent census substitute records.
Directories can also be used to track migration and determine approximate dates of death. If you’ve traced an ancestor through several years of directories and then they don’t appear anymore, it likely means that the individual either moved or died.

Produced by the Society of Australian Genealogists in 2004, this fully searchable, AGCI Volume 1. CDROM contains indexes to 3.9 million records drawn from the collections of 39 family history societies and institutions throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Some of the main records indexed on the CDROM include: cemetery transcriptions, especially for NSW, Victoria, Western Australia and New Zealand; newspaper cuttings; Irish Transportation Records 1788-1868; shipping into NSW and South Australia; as well as other sources, such as council rate books and war memorials.
Whilst entries predominantly relate to Australia and New Zealand, some overseas entries are included. Entries relate only to individuals. There are no listings under place names, companies, ships or broad subject headings.
An AGCI entry will show:
(1) The surname and given name of the person to whom the entry relates
(2) The place where the event occurred
(3) The date of the event
(4) Whether the entry is a cross reference
(5) What type of record contains the entry. For example, the entry may come from a cemetery transcription, government gazette, newspaper or a parish register.
(6) The exact reference for the entry. This directs the researcher to the organisation which submitted the information to AGCI and gives the exact location of the information within that organisation. AGCI CDs facilitate seeking further details, by automatically inserting the organisation address and reference into a form letter requesting further information and a copy of the indexed record, if available.
The previous microfiche edition of AGCI included indexes to the NSW Government Gazette 1832-1863 but these records are not on this CDROM because of capacity restraints. They record Australian life from the early years of European settlement until 1988. The AHRR database is limited to records identified during the Australian Bicentennial Historic Records Search in 1987-88 and no new records have been added since then.
The AHRR is a guide to sources on Australian social, economic, business, labour and cultural history at the local level. Strengths of the database include family history, women and children’s history, local history, rural properties, businesses, personal World War I & II histories, migrants and migration, sports and sporting clubs and festivals and celebrations.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority's list of all ships currently registered as Australian. Vessel details include length, type of ship, year completed and home port.
The Australian Shipping Registration Office was established in 1982 under the provisions of the Shipping Registration Act 1981 . Since the formation of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in 1991, the office has been a part of the Authority.
The main purpose of the Act is to fix the conditions for the registration of ships in Australia and to grant ships Australian nationality. It also provides for Australian ships to fly the Australian National Flag or the Australian Red Ensign in accordance with Australia's obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 , to which Australia is a party.
The business of the Australian Shipping Registration Office includes the establishment of the ownership of ships, the registration of mortgages and caveats, the granting of certificates and providing public access to the information held in the Australian Register of Ships.
It should be noted that the Australian States also keep records of ships and small craft that are subject to their jurisdiction. The State records, however, are not registers of ownership or nationality.
Historical ship registration records are held by the National Archives of Australia. The most important of them are the Australian Registers of British Ships (1834-1982). Microfilm copies of the registers are available for reading at all regional offices of Australian Archives.

The National Archives has created the Bringing Them Home (BTH) name index which aims to help Indigenous people find information about themselves, their families and their country from National Archive records relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their history. This index was created in response to the recommendations of Bringing Them Home, the report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families, released in 1997.
The BTH name index index contains: names of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; names of non-Indigenous people related to or associated with Indigenous people; names of missions and institutions where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were placed; and places where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lived or visited. The index does not contain information about the people named. To see this information you will need to view the original records (files, papers and photographs) or photocopies of them.
If the reason for seeking access is to obtain information for the purpose of re-establishing family and community links, under the Memoranda of Understanding between the Archives and Northern Territory, Victorian and South Australian Indigenous communities you may look at information normally restricted from public access. For further information see Fact Sheet 114 – Memorandum of Understanding with Northern Territory Aboriginal people, Fact Sheet 205 – Memorandum of Understanding with the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency or Fact Sheet 209 – Memorandum of Understanding with SA Indigenous people.
You can ask for the BTH name index to be searched by contacting the Archives’ National Reference Service at ( ph:1300 886 881; fax: 1300 886 882; email : ref@naa.gov.au ). To assist reference officers undertake a thorough search, it helps if you provide as many details as possible, including: name of the person you are researching – this includes any variations in the spelling of given names, nicknames, forgotten names, or Indigenous names; family connections – the names of any siblings, children or other relatives; language group, country or homeland – which were sometimes used to identify people; place – where the person was born, lived, worked, or was sent to; date of birth, age at events, or date of death of the person; date ranges – year or period the person was in a certain place or area, such as the period they worked on a particular cattle station; and significant events that may have occurred in the person’s life, such as being evacuated because of natural disaster or war.
The BTH name index is not the only information resource available to researchers of Indigenous family history. While most government records relating to Aboriginal affairs before 1970 were created and maintained by state governments, the National Archives holds large quantities of records relevant to Northern Territory and Victorian Indigenous people.
The National Archives holds many Northern Territory records because from 1911 until self-government in 1978, the Commonwealth administered the Territory. Northern Territory records are held in the Darwin and Canberra offices. National Archive holdings on Victoria are large because the Victorian government handed the responsibility for Aboriginal affairs and associated records to the Commonwealth in 1975. Victorian records dating from 1860 are held in the Melbourne office. Finally, the National Archives holds more recent records for all states because in 1967 the Constitution was amended to allow the Australian Government to legislate for all Aboriginal people.
There are a number of other online National Archive fact sheets concerning records on Indigenous people, including : Fact Sheet 113 – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; Fact sheet 150 – The 1967 Referendum; Fact sheet 108 – The pastoral industry in the Northern Territory; and Fact sheet 112 – Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. Go to Fact sheets on Indigenous Australia.
The Australian National Archives (ANA) has a substantial holding of military records. Major holdings include records for the Australian Army, Navy, Merchant Navy and Air Force, conscription and national service and records relating to the Boer War, WW1, WW2 and the Vietnam War. The ANA also holds Victorian colonial defence force personnel records which were transferred to the Commonwealth following Federation in 1901.
Deaths on war service are generally not registered by the state authorities but by the Army, Navy or Air Force. You would need to write to the relevant service to obtain copies of death certificates.
You can undertake an online name search of the following ANA records via RecordSearch :
(1) Australian Defence Forces personnel records including - personnel records for the Army (1901 -1977), Navy (1911 - 1977) and Air Force (1921-1977); the Boer War; and World War 1 and 2.
(2) Other defence records - service pay records; RAAF accident records; Australian Prisoners of War records; Court martial records; Repatriation cases (Boer War & WW1); War gratuity records; Civilian service records; Army Inventions Directorate; and Papua New Guinea evacuees records.
The National Archives has a number of fact sheets on its military records, including: Fact Sheet 63 – Sources of information about military service; Fact sheet 67 – Boer War records; Fact sheet 134 – (Victorian) Colonial defence; Fact Sheet 136 – Army service records; Fact sheet 30 – Navy service records; Fact sheet 31 – Navy crew and ships records; Fact sheet 32 – RAAF service records; Fact sheet 160 – Universal military training in Australia, 1911–29; Fact sheet 161 – Conscription referendums, 1916 and 1917; Fact Sheet 177 – Defence service records for WWI and WWII; Fact sheet 162 – National service and war, 1939–45; Fact sheet 39 – Civilian service in World War II; Fact sheet 234 – United States forces in Queensland, 1941–45; Fact sheet 163 – National Service, 1951–59; Fact sheet 164 – National service, 1965–72; Fact sheet 54 – Veterans’ case files; and Fact sheet 89 – Births, deaths and marriages.
Naturalisation had been a responsibility of the individual colonies until 1903 when it was taken over by the Commonwealth. As a consequence, the National Archives holds citizenship records for all states from 1904, when the citizenship function was passed to the Australian Government. However, the National Archives also holds naturalisation records for the Colony of Victoria and the Province of South Australia for the period from 1848 to 1903. Naturalisation records for New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania before 1904 are held by the respective State government archives.
At Federation in 1901, ‘British subject’ was the sole civic status noted in the Australian Constitution. An administrative concept of citizenship arose from the need to distinguish between British subjects who were permanent residents and those who were merely visitors to Australia. This was necessary for the Commonwealth to exercise its powers over immigration and deportation. This administrative concept of citizenship was formalised in the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948. In 1958 the Act was amended so that naturalisation could only be revoked if obtained by fraud. This prevented a naturalised person being stripped of citizenship and deported.
Throughout the 1960s, Australian citizens were still required to declare their nationality as British. The term ‘Australian nationality’ had no official recognition or meaning until the Act was amended in 1969 and renamed the Citizenship Act. In 1973 the Act was renamed the Australian Citizenship Act. It was not until 1984 that Australian citizens ceased to be British subjects.
The two main types of citizenship records are naturalisation certificates and case files. Naturalisation case files, which include the application for citizenship, oath of allegiance and other correspondence, generally give more detail than the certificate. Citizenship records provide much information about the migrant including date of arrival in Australia, ship (or flight) travelled on, town and country of birth, names of other family members, education, profession and address in Australia at the time of naturalisation.
Pre-Federation records normally consist of Memorial for Letters of Naturalization (the application), Oath of Memorialist (ie the applicant) and Certificate and Oath of Allegiance. Post-Federation records may also include a Statutory Declaration, Application for Certificate of Naturalization and some routine correspondence.
The naturalisation file may already be indexed on the National Archives RecordSearch. Conduct searches using surname as a keyword term.
If the file you are seeking is not listed on RecordSearch the Department of Immigration Citizenship Index may be consulted. A microfiche version of the Citizenship Index is held by all offices of the National Archives. Arranged alphabetically, the index lists all applicants for naturalisation from 1904 to the present.
Because it contains information not yet in the open access period the Citizenship Index cannot be made publicly available. National Archives reference staff will consult it on your behalf to identify the file number and location of records of naturalisations that took place more than 30 years ago. In general records relating to naturalisation become publicly available once they are more than 30 years old. Additional sources that may be consulted include the nominal index card series A1652, A3907 and A3908. A search is more likely to be successful if the following information can be supplied: full name (include any known alias or alternate spelling of the name); date of birth; date of arrival in Australia; and State of residence at time of naturalisation.
For more information on naturalisation records see the following National Archive online fact sheets: 68 – Naturalisation records held in Canberra; and 187 – Citizenship in Australia.
Before Federation, each of the Australian colonies was responsible for its own immigration policies and schemes. In 1901, control of immigration restriction was passed to the Commonwealth, but the practical responsibility for immigration and its encouragement did not pass from the state governments to the Commonwealth until the Joint Commonwealth and States Scheme of 1921.
Before 1921 then, the role of the Australian government in immigration was mostly to control prohibited migration, monitor illegal immigrants and to advertise the nation’s resources overseas. From the 1920s there were new immigration agreements between the Commonwealth and state governments and between Britain and Australia, and the Australian government took control of assisted migration schemes.
Until World War II, immigration policy and administration were looked after by a number of different Commonwealth Government departments, primarily: Department of External Affairs 1901–16 (CA 7); Department of Home and Territories, 1916–28 (CA 15); Department of Home Affairs, 1928–32 (CA 24 and CA 28); and the Department of the Interior, 1932–39 (CA 27 and CA 31). In 1945, the newly created Department of Immigration (CA 51) took over control of all immigration matters, although the Department of Interior continued to play an important role.
Before 1948, the captain or master of all passenger ships and aircrafts was required to provide Custom authorities with a list of passengers arriving in or leaving from a port. From 1948, cards filled in by the passengers were introduced and from the 1960s cards increasingly replaced lists, especially for those arriving by air.
Documents may include applications forms, passenger lists, entry permits and accommodation records and naturalisation. Records may include the following information: name, nationality, birth date and place, education, occupation, family details and even passport photos.
Records are available if they are more than 30 years old. This website allows you to search the catalogue to many of these records and then apply, using the location numbers found. Unfortunately, there are no comprehensive name indexes for passenger records. To effectively search for family members you need know how and when they arrived.
For arrivals by sea betwen 1926 and 1947, you can search the National Archives passenger arrivals index which includes the names from passenger lists in the National Archives series K269, Inward passenger manifests for ships and aircraft arriving at Fremantle, Perth Airport and outports, chronological series, 1898–1978. This index is useful because the passenger lists lodged in Fremantle included all passengers disembarking in Fremantle, and usually passengers travelling on to other Australian ports (such as Melbourne or Sydney) or overseas ports (such as Auckland or Colombo). Most passenger vessels from Europe made Fremantle, Western Australia, their first port. At July 2005, the index included names from passenger lists for the period of January 1926 to 1947. The current coverage of the index can be found at the top and bottom of the 'Index to passenger arrivals’ screen. To access this database click on the Passenger index button at the top of the RecordSearch search screen at: http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx .
For other arrivals, you need to know the port or airport of arrival, the name of the vessel or aircraft number, as well as the month and year the vessel arrived. If you are unable to identify the date of arrival within two months, your search could be very time-consuming.
For further passenger information, you can check the following National Archives online fact sheets : Fact Sheet 220 – Index to passenger arrivals (such as Fremantle arrivals); Fact Sheet 38 – Passenger records held in Canberra; Fact Sheet 56 – Passenger records held in Perth; Fact Sheet 64 – Passenger records held in Sydney; Fact Sheet 172 – Passenger records held in Melbourne; Fact Sheet 184 – Passenger records held in Hobart; and Fact Sheet 190 – Passenger records held in Brisbane.
Robert Le Maistre, a National Archives volunteer, has created an alphabetical index to all the microfilm shipping registers the National Archives hold. The most important of these registers are the Australian Registers of British Ships (1834-1982). The online index is searched by entering the whole or part of a ship's name and/or year of voyage and basic information is then provided about the ship, namely, the official number, the year built, the port number, the National Archive microfilm roll number and which National Archive office in Australia holds the record.
The National Archives also provides some online Fact sheets on migration, citizenship and travel which includes shipping records. Fact sheet 37 – Maritime records held in Hobart outlines the collection of maritime records held by the National Archives in Hobart, includes many records dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These records were created by the Tasmanian colonial government and the Commonwealth Government from 1901. They include records relating to functions such as customs administration, vessel registration, passenger arrivals and departures, lighthouses and navigation, and a range of other matters associated with shipping activities in and around the island State of Tasmania. Fact sheet 65 – Customs shipping records held in Sydney outlines customs shipping records held by the National Archives in Sydney, including Registers of ships, arrivals and departures, Sydney (arranged chronologically).
The Australian National Archives also has an online photographic database, PhotoSearch, which currently contains 160,000 images, including 1,409 related to ships. See Fact sheet 19 – PhotoSearch for more information.

This CDROM is the fourth edition by James Hugh Donohoe entitled the Paracensus 1788-1828.
It contains 130,000 entries embracing the sixteen British sites around Australia, namely Port Jackson-Botany Bay, Norfolk Island, O’Sullivan’s Cove (Port Phillip), King Island, Morton Bay, Westernport, Van Diemens Land, New Guinea, Ambon, Albany, Melville Island, New Zealand, Swan River, the Kimberleys and Cape Baron and the colony of Americans on Kangaroo Island by 1828.
Entries include the names of 70,000 convicts (52,000 actually arrived), 27,500 locally born children, 18,000 family units, 10,000 soldiers, 1,000 sailors, 8,500 migrants and 500 Aborigines and Maories living in settler communities.
The work also includes the names of 20,000 people whose means of arrival could not be discerned nor their status identified, viz., army, sailor, migrant, convict of locally born. These names were sourced from church birth, death and marriage records, business transactions, victualling lists, church event witnesses, memorials, bank accounts, court depositions, Government correspondence and literary works. 5,000 of these names were found in burial records only.
Problems encountered in undertaking this paracensus include:
* There are no other records extant on more than half the persons buried in Australia in the era.
* A baptismal record for most of the local children listed in Musters were not found.
* Most of the married couples recorded in musters were not mentioned among local marriage registers.
* There were 50% more names of people on average for each convict ship of arrival identified in the musters than the ships actually carried (some ships had 300% convicts mentioned to indent).
* More convict ships than identified by Charles Bateson in his work 'The Convict Ships' were located.
* One man fathered three children several years after his “death”.
* A convict killed by Aborigines in Port Stephens answered a muster two years later.
* A large number of convicts are not listed on the indent of the ship arrival stated in the muster.
* Several convicts identified the names of several different ships of arrival on different musters.
* One convict who “died” en-route had a wife and then children later.
* Several people who were buried before the arrival of the second fleet are not listed in first fleet records.
The codes for records/sources used are listed on the back of the CDROM cover (ie: A73 = Waterloo Fund Donors).
A 4-volume hardcopy third edition published in 2002 is located in ML at Q929.394/ 34 SET and an incomplete edition produced in 1998 is in SRL at REF 10/NQ929.394/16 (hardcopy) and ML at REF 1/MAV/FM6/702 (8 microfiche).
If you are researching ancestors who were stockowners in Australia, the Pastoral Directories are a great resource. This compendium contains facsimiles of the years 1913, 1923, 1925, 1931, and 1954.
Australian Pastoral Directories were published yearly, and each edition lists thousands of stockowners and agents for most states in Australia. The information listed contains the name of the station and the owner, however the larger states (New South Wales and Queensland) contain more detail including numbers of cattle and sheep.
Australian Periodical Publications 1840 to 1845 is a digital library of Australian journals that began publication between 1840 and 1845 and are listed in John Alexander Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia ( hence the alternative project name: the Ferguson Project ).
Some 74 of the 90-odd serial titles listed for the 1840 to 1845 period in the Ferguson Bibliography will eventually be digitised. 11 titles could not be located in Australia and another 5 titles were withdrawn from the project because they proved to be impossible to digitise adequately. Publications range from local newspapers, shipping and trade news, religious, colonial and political journals and are of relevance to research into 19th Century Australian colonial life. Some titles go up to 1855.
You can BROWSE the list of journal titles alphabetically, by year or by subject and you can keyword SEARCH journal titles and table of contents.
This project began in 1996 as part of the Australian Cooperative Digitisation Project and is a collaborative project between the University of Sydney Library, the State Library of NSW, the National Library of Australia and Monash University Library, with the support of the Australian Research Council.
Produced by the Australian Co-operative Digitisation Project, this website includes digitised runs of journals and newspapers of relevance to Australia and colonial life. Some runs go up to 1855. Publications range from local newspapers, shipping and trade news, religious, colonial and political journals.
This is a draft site to be further developed by a team headed by Professor Elizabeth Webby at the English Department of the University of Sydney and Creagh Cole at the University of Sydney Library, and involving Ross Coleman at the University of Sydney Library, the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) as a Linkage Partner, John Tranter, and postgraduate students and research assistants. The project will focus on the presentation of original literary material from Australian poets. Maintained by Peter Larson, this website contains shipping and passenger information for Australia and, to an increasing extent, New Zealand. Information is derived primarily from historical newspapers and state and national archive material. There are now indexes to over 66,700 arrivals and departures and over 86,000 passengers.
The website has the following shipping indexes: Arrivals, Departures, Shipwrecks, Ship's Captains, Passengers and crew, Vessel index , Historical background, Vessel related reports and diaries, journals and reports. There are also some pioneer biographies and ship images.
The information available depends on the amount of detail provided by the source material. In some cases, this might be little more than the name of the vessel, through to complete passenger lists and background information for the trip, passengers and vessel.
Although there are a significant number of entries found here, it is just a small fraction of the total from 1788 to 1968. By the 1840's, Sydney was handling 300 to 500 coastal and foreign shipping movements a month and Melbourne was handling 100 to 200. This grew in the 1850's so that Melbourne was handling more shipping than Sydney, especially during early the gold-rush period. So by the mid 1850's, there were over 20,000 shipping movements per year for Australian ports.
This website contains almost all of the convict ships, as well as most of the ships that arrived in Sydney before 1825 where passengers were known to be on board. However, many ships in this period would have carried passengers and the records have either been lost, or there were no records in the first place. Also included are many of the vessels that have passenger or other documentation at the NSW Archives Office and the Queensland State Archives.
An alternative source for information on vessels not listed on this website is the 'Shipping Arrivals' books, found in some libraries. There have been books published up until 1845 for Sydney and later for Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.
One area that is particularly difficult for researchers is the coastal movement of people, as many of these are not listed in official records. For these types of records, the best place to look is in the 'Shipping Intelligence' columns of the newspapers of the time. These often list the saloon passengers and occasionally will also list those in steerage.
Although there are a large number of passengers found here, it is only a small fraction of the total number of passenger lists available for the period covered. Currently almost all of the passengers listed are from the 19th Century, which appears to be the period of most interest. If you find a vessel and look at the details to find that there isn't a passenger list, then it won't be found anywhere else here. This does not mean that there isn't a passenger list available from other sources.
This problem can be worse when it comes to passenger's names. Depending on the year, type of vessel, type of passenger and the source material used, the person may not be included in the passenger list at all. This is most common for steerage passengers in the newspapers, for example, where steerage passengers were often given as a total number, or ignored completeley.
The spelling of a passenger's name may also be wrong, as many people were not overly literate and for those that were, there were many who could not spell. Also, some of the passenger lists are compiled by clerks or ship's officers and the passenger would say their name and the clerk would write what they heard, resulting in many differences in spelling based on differences in dialects and mother tongue.
This website also promotes volunteer participation in the OzShips Transcription Projects, which aims to capture shipping and passenger information from predominantly 19th Century newspapers. The main focus is Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands but information for other countries is accepted.
Completed newspaper projects include the Launceston Courier, the Melbourne Weekly Courier and the Teetotal Advocate. Currently being transcribed are the Shipping Gazette and Sydney General Trade List, the New Zealander and the Sydney Gazette. Transcription work begun but now inactive includes the Commercial Journal and Advertiser (40% complete), Free Press and Commercial Journal (90% complete), Geelong Advertiser (20% complete), Melbourne Courier (70% complete), South Australian News (15% complete) and the Sydney Herald/Sydney Morning Herald (2% complete).
Besides containing shipping arrival details for various ports around Australia, they also include passenger list and occasional crew list details for some of the ships. Also contains a number of background pages covering a small number of shipwreck details and other information such as passenger diaries

Each issue consisted of approximately 16 pages and included many humourous and personal stories, poems, songs, tips and sketches which reflect the life of 'the Australian soldier'.
The magazine was printed in the field by the Australian Imperiel Force (AIF) Printing Section'. Issues no. 1 on January 18, 1918 to no. 13 in April, 1919 were produced in Fletre, France. Subsequently, production took place in Fauquembergues, France, from January 18, 1918 to January, 1919 and then in Marchienne-au-Pont, Belgium, from February, 1919 to April, 1919. Federal Department of Veterans' Affairs website providing access to the following military nominal rolls:
(1) First World War Nominal Roll - prepared by the Australian War Memorial, this is a single alphabetic listing of approximately 324,000 names of members of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) who served overseas during the First World War. The WW1 Roll consists of digitised images of the Official Records series AWM133 entitled 'Nominal Roll of Australian Imperial Force who left Australia for service abroad, 1914-1918 War'.
The WW1 roll was compiled before October 1919, probably at AIF Administrative Headquarters, London. It is believed that the roll was compiled to assist with the administrative arrangements necessary to repatriate members of the AIF to Australia. The sources on which the roll was based are not known. The roll includes the names of those who served with the Australian Flying Corps and Australian Medical Corps, but not the names of those who served with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force.
The WW1 index is searched by surname and the contents is as follows: Service number (Officers and nursing sisters were not allocated service numbers); Final rank; Surname, first name (including some but not all honours); Unit of service at the time of death or at the end of the war; Date of enlistment; Non-effective entry (i.e. how that person became no longer effective, for example Returned to Australia) also referred to as 'fate'. A blank indicates that the person was still effective abroad at the time of compilation of the roll; and Date of death or start date of non-effect.
The authoritative source of information on individual service men and women is the personal service record. Copies of First World War service records can be obtained from the National Archives of Australia.
(2) World War Two Nominal Roll - contains the service details of some one million individuals who served with Australia's defence forces and the Merchant Navy during the period 3 September 1939 to 2 September 1945. Australians who served with other Commonwealth or Allied Forces are not included in this Nominal Roll. Respective overseas countries may hold the World War Two service records for those Australians. In addition, those who served in the Australian Women's Land Army, the Australian Red Cross and philanthropic organisations, are not included in this Roll.
You can search the WW2 index by name, service number, honours and place (of birth, of enlistment, or residential locality at enlistment).
